Shaping the Environment of the Future

Bishop’s Falls

Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility

The Town of Bishop’s Falls is situated along the Exploits River, the largest Salmon River in Newfoundland, habitat to over 50% of the Islands spawning salmon. The Town commissioned Abydoz to Design and Build the wastewater treatment facility in 2016 in order to provide an economical method for providing high quality effluent. The facility consists of 6 acres of HDPE lined waste containment areas.

The system won the 2015 Project of the Year award Presented by the Atlantic Canada Water and Wastewater Association.

Design

Population Equivalent: 3,600 PE

Average Flow: 2,900 m3/day

Wetland Treatment Area: 18,000 m2

Average Effluent Results

CBOD: 10 mg/L

TSS: 10 mg/L

Process

The effluent from the Town is pumped to the treatment facility where it passes through a small building with a spiral lift screen to remove non organic and larger materials. The flow then enters two settling chambers in series where solids and suspended solids settle out. Sludge from the setting chambers is pumped to onsite sludge treatment wetlands for dewatering.

During times of high infiltration, the flow is split by a weir that sends the main flow to the main wetland treatment beds and any excess to the storm water treatment bed; there is no bypass on this system. The main flow first enters a two vertical flow wetland beds and is then split between the 6 horizontal flow wetland beds. The flows are recombined with the treated storm water at the end of the system and discharged to the Exploits River.
